The Formula's Opening Statement
Last year's evidence points to Louisville. The Cardinals won the direct matchup 96-88, produced the better regular-season net rating, and finished with top-20 national marks in scoring, effective field-goal percentage, and net rating in Staaty's loaded data.
The 2026-27 projection is closer. Louisville has the stronger returning statistical shape and a loaded transfer group. Kentucky gets the game at Rupp and added an elite spacing piece in Milan Momcilovic. This is a lean, not a coronation. Rivalry games are famously rude to spreadsheets.
Last Season, Plotted
Each dot shows national percentile among 361 teams with at least 20 regular-season games. Farther from the middle is better. The number above each dot is the actual team value.
Shape of the Matchup
The radar makes the trade clear: Louisville owned scoring, shooting, and margin; Kentucky's counterweight was schedule strength and ball security.
Four Factors vs. Division I
Dots to the right beat the 361-team average. Turnover rate is inverted so right is always better.
Where They Lived Nationally
Every gray dot is a qualifying Division I team. The upper-right quadrant combines above-average offense with above-average defense. Louisville separated from Kentucky on both ends, with the larger gap coming from defensive efficiency.
Driving point: Kentucky's tougher schedule matters, but it does not erase a 7.0-point gap in net rating. Louisville's profile was closer to the national two-way elite.
The Season Was Not a Straight Line
Rolling five-game net rating shows form, not just the final average. Both teams cooled after explosive starts, but Louisville stayed positive at the finish while Kentucky's final five-game window slipped below zero.
Driving point: Louisville's advantage was real, but it narrowed substantially by March. That makes the rematch projection a lean rather than a blowout call.

The offense created the separation: 84.8 points per game and 56.6% effective shooting, both top 20 nationally.

The Wildcats owned the tougher schedule and cleaner turnover rate, but trailed Louisville in shooting and margin.
Three Players Who Change the Rematch
These are transfer-season inputs, not Staaty projections disguised as certainty. Their prior-season production is shown so the roster argument stays attached to real numbers.

Kentucky's swing piece is a 6-foot-9 shooting problem. His gravity can widen driving lanes and punish Louisville whenever the Cardinals load the paint. Source

Trimble gives Louisville an experienced downhill guard and point-of-attack defender. He also scored a career-high 30 against the Cardinals last February, which is an unusually persuasive scouting tape. Source

Wells adds flexible frontcourt production rather than one narrow skill. Rebounding, passing, steals, and interior finishing give Kelsey another way to keep pressure on Kentucky's size. Source
How Each Team Wins
Turn it into a pressure game. Trimble and Adrian Wooley harass the ball, the frontcourt changes shots, and Jackson Shelstad supplies enough half-court creation to keep the pace tilted.
Make Rupp a shot-quality tax. Momcilovic stretches the defense, the Wildcats' size owns the glass, and Kentucky's guards preserve the turnover advantage it held last year.
The Projection
Early lean: Louisville, by a small margin. The Cardinals begin with the better 2025-26 statistical baseline and more proven two-way production among their headline additions. Kentucky's home floor and shooting upside keep this firmly in toss-up territory.
The cleanest flip signal is Kentucky's perimeter efficiency. If Momcilovic's spacing turns the Wildcats from a 53.0% effective-shooting team into something closer to Louisville's old 56.6% mark, the formula changes sides quickly. It has no loyalty and even less dignity.
Method & Sources
Staaty data covers 2025-26 NCAA men's regular-season team averages, standings, national ranks, and the November 11, 2025 head-to-head result. National percentiles are calculated from rank among 361 qualifying teams; defensive and turnover measures are inverted so a higher percentile is always better.
